Newsletter #8, January 2025

New Year's Resolutions

Albeit the new year already being a month old, it still feels as if 2025 has just begun!

Maybe it is because we are already going full speed into the developments that time is just swooshing by. Over the last weeks a number of new activities started in the community, which you will read about in this newsletter.

Overall, we intend to shift a bit more from software to hardware developments, the ultimate goal being to have a fully functional two unit and three unit rover by autumn.

This newsletter will be rather brief, so let's get right to it!

Work Organization

The organization of work packages has now fully moved to the organization repository. You can find here the roadmap for 2025 and all the work packages.

All of this is updated frequently, so please make sure to visit that page regularly.

Hardware Projects

As already said, we will be focusing on improving and extending hardware projects of the LibreCube ecosystem. We kicked off these three projects over the last weeks. If you are interested to join any of those projects, let us know in the chat or via email.

Power Module
The existing power module will be improved to including maximum power point tracking, current measurements, a telecommand/telemetry interface, and other features. You can find more information here.

VHF/UHF Communications Module
Up to now we are using WiFi to command and monitor our rover. With this project we intend to develop a communications module that operates in the VHF/UHF amateur radio band. Ultimately, this communication link can then be used for satellite operation, as these frequencies are typically used for CubeSat missions. To fund this development we are applying for an ARDC grant.

Onboard Computer Module
The RaspberryPi onboard computer will be equipped with a memory module and be designed for redundant operation. To achieve this, another module, the so-called reconfiguration module will be developed. We are aligning this development with the principles of SAVOIR.

GSoC Application

LibreCube is applying to become a mentor organization for this year's Google Summer of Code program. You can find the preliminary list of proposed projects here. Google will announce the selected organizations be end of February. Fingers crossed!
Stay tuned for the newsletter next month and have a good time till then!
